Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder

Crystal Renn is beautiful. She is a size 12 and she is beautiful!

I just finished reading her book, Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and Ultimate Embrace of Curves! Crystal's book details the story of how she came to be a model, and ultimately how battling anorexia led her to realize that she needed to love her body without fighting it. With this realization, she ate healthy foods, exercised and gained seventy pounds. This lead her to become one of the world's foremost plus-size models. (I don't really know how plus-sized she is... look at her, she is gorgeous. But the fashion world calls a size 8 plus-sized, so there you go!)

Crystal Renn's book reads like a conversation with an old friend. She seems intelligent, fun, and honest. I think that if we were to meet each other we would totally get along, and maybe become BFFs!

Throughout the second half of the book Crystal discusses the work of Dr. Linda Bacon. (You know what they say.... Bacon makes everything better.) Bacon's book Health at Every Size really spoke to Crystal, and in turn is calling me. I cannot wait to read it to see what it says to me!

Just as Bacon's book and philosophies spoke to Crystal Renn, so too have her thoughts spoken to me. Some of her words really resonated with me...

"Weight is the most egregious example of 'If only I achieve this one thing, my life will truly begin,' but it's not the only example. Maybe you've thought if you only were more popular, if only you had a boyfriend, if your boyfriend would marry you, if you only had more money, if you only had a better job, if your parents were only nicer people, your life would be perfect.  Guess What? It wouldn't." (p.210)

I used to be one of those people. I used to be someone who truly believed that my life would finally be super-awesome if only...if only I had this or that, if only the scale displayed this number, if only I were skinny. But I am not. I can only be the person I am, with the body I have. Crystal Renn is beautiful in all her plus-sized glory. And so am I.

  1. Amen to that. Educated, smart, funny, caring, honest, curvy. Thank God for women like us and thank God for the men who love us. Good post.
